[ My New Pet - Regret the Egret ]
I been tinking, world, about inspiration and creativity and coming together to make things better. There are so many brilliant ideas floating around that you (by which I mean me, middle-class white kid) just don't really see unless you're actively looking for them. It makes me wish I'd applied to something like Peace Corps or Teach for America or even med school. Because as important as basic science research is, it's not nearly as juicy and personally meaningful as actively helping people, most of it is just this... this mathturbation. And it is irking me. |

[ How to Blaspheme Properly ]
Some days you wake up with only your flaws. Selfishness freezing your feet. And you shuffle across creaky, weak floors to turn on the shower (which always takes forever to get warm). You look in the mirror at the skinny, fat, pimply, hairy, balding, blood-shot thing in the mirror, Spit out the sour little voice that's stuck in your mouth, and scour the stinky ol' fridge for something to stuff in your face.
"Thank God there's OJ." "Thank God the water's warm." "Thank God I have wool socks."
Your mouth gets a little sweeter. Your mirror looks a little better. And just like that. Things are looking up.
Outside There's a flock of coffee shops and cigarettes. There's kids running around There's dogs pissing and panting, happily. Somewhere There's a good day at work. Somewhere There's a good song playing.
Somewhere There's someone smiling at you. And, when you're in the mood, when you get over the whole flaw busy-ness, you can smile back at them or wherever else you're looking. Thank God for that. |
